Biodigester System


A Biodigester simply means an installed container/tank which digests organic material biologically. The concept of a biodigester technology is basically aerobic and anaerobic decomposition of organic wastes into water and gases. Biodigester systems work by taking advantage of aerobic and anaerobic processes through an closed system. Anaerobic process is done by promoting introduced microbes to perform their biological functions of breaking down organic waste by providing them an oxygen-free space, that is underwater. Aerobic process on the other hand work on organic matter floating on the surface of the water in the tank.

A biodigester refers to an enclosed system of aerobic and anaerobic decomposition of human waste into mineral-rich water and gases. Anaerobic activities take place under water while aerobic take place on the surface of water.

Biodigester system is a combination of designed structures, piping, microbes and processes for speeding up the decomposition of organic materials into environmentally-friendly by-products. A tank allows microbes to completely break down human wastes into environmentally-friendly by-products such as mineral-rich water, methane, carbon dioxide and other gases.

All anaerobic biodigestion systems adhere to the same basic principles whether the feedstock is food waste, animal manures or wastewater sludge. Although the process is the same, designs will vary from digester to digester. Biodigesters vary in types, sizes and their uses.

It is common knowledge nowadays that sewerage facilities are limited, not accessible to majority of urban dwellers. The introduction of conventional septic tank proved a solution to increasing challenges to human waste management. Biodigester systems is used for the breakdown of human waste from toilets and kitchen into water, and gases. Generally the system comprises of at least one biodigester tank inoculated with microoganisms, grease trap and soak pit connected to toilet(s) and kitchen by a network of pipes.

The waste from toilets and kitchen enters the biodigester tank through the inlet pipe; it then passes over the consortium of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria which break it down into mineral–rich water and gases. The mineral rich water comes out through the outlet pipe into a soak tank or irrigation system. The water can also be utilized for irragation. However, the water meant for farming has to pass through additional biodigester tanks for further treatment before use.

The resilient and highly efficient micro-organisms inoculums introduced in the biodigester systems during installation are capable of braking-down 100% of waste from toilets and kitchen into water and gases, thus eliminating the need for exhaust services and maintenance
